CentOS（Community ENTerprise Operating System）是Linux發行版之一，它是來自于Red Hat Enterprise Linux依照開放源代碼規定釋出的源代碼所編譯而成。由于出自同樣的源代碼，因此有些要求高度穩定性的服務器以CentOS替代商業版的Red Hat Enterprise Linux使用。兩者的不同，在于CentOS并不包含封閉源代碼軟件。
CentOS，我們有很多人叫它社區企業操作系統，不管你怎么叫它，它都是linux的一個發行版本。CentOS并不是全新的linux發行版，倘若一說到RedHat這個大名，大家似乎都聽過，在RedHat家族中有企業版的產品，它是 Red Hat Enterprise Linux（以下稱之為RHEL），CentOS正是這個RHEL的克隆版本，RHEL是很多企業采用的linux發行版本，需要向RedHat付費才可以使用，并能得到付過費用的服務和技術支持和版本升級。這個CentOS可以像REHL一樣的構筑linux系統環境，但不需要向RedHat付任何的費用，同樣也得不到任何有償技術支持和升級服務。
CentOS計劃是在2003年紅帽決定不再提供免費的技術支持及產品認證之后的部份"紅帽重建者"（Red Hat rebuilders）之一。
CentOS和Linueox、組裝Linux （White box Linux）、Tao Linux 、X/OS Linux，及科學Linux （Scientific Linux）等都以紅帽所發布的源代碼原件重建Red Hat Enterprise Linux的翻版，并修正了已經發現了的redhat的bug。
CentOS是"Caos Linux"獨立計劃的一個分枝，在Lawrence Berkeley 國家實驗室擔任管理員與程序設計師的Kurtzer 表示。但后來Caos基金會最受歡迎的計劃變成是RHEL的重建。
